Whenever disaster strikes, living things adapt, often with greater ease than we humans do. Molt, migrate, bend, bite—the strategies vary depending on the threat. When her house is caught in a devastating flood, the narrator of Inondables relies on these same tactics to survive in her waterlogged world.
Written in the wake of the flooding in May 2023 of Baie-Saint-Paul, this debut novel by Marilyne Busque-Dubois reflects on life under climate change, from its more concrete aspects to the existential issues it raises. The author draws from life sciences and poetry to examine the challenges and responsibilities of humans and their place in the world. The result is a sensitive “auto-eco-fiction” that rejects hierarchies and observes our environment as women, foxes, and insects see it—and as a river runs through it.
