Laura always finds herself in strange places, whether it is in the fog-filled city of Shivering Heights, a floating hamlet surrounded by danger-infested waters or the High Arctic with its ravenous bears. Lead by her scientific curiosity, she is a willing witness to the increasingly violent climate changes unaware that, in this world in mutation, the line between humans and monsters is irrevocably blurred. An eye opening debut by a writer to watch.

A feverish and sensual novel about living in a world where nature slowly takes its revenge on humanity.

La Presse

‘‘A new novelist you must read.
★★★★

Publishers Weekly

‘‘Vadnais’s exciting debut immerses the reader into the dreamy and menacing near-future world of Shivering Heights, a flooded wilderness in the twilight of the human race. […] This dark, sensual novel invites the reader to imagine nature thriving in the toxic aftermath of human domination, and makes for an essential addition to the recent crop of eco-fiction.

Heather O'Neill, author of The Lonely Hearts Hotel

“Vadnais’s language is a wild garden that encompasses and devours all life.”
